Sur place: I. Interior 2. Plaas 3. Türkiyem

Sur place is the title of an electro-acoustic triptych based on concrete sounds which I recorded on three different locations in 2007 and 2008. Part two and three contain field recordings made on a farm in South Africa and in a street in Amsterdam-West after a football match, respectively. The sounds that can be heard in the first part – Interior – were recorded indoors, in the living-room of the house where I spent my youth.

The work was premiered at November Music 2012 as part of Cineac Sonore, a cinema that was turned into a listening room for electronic music. Especially for this occasion, I – in close collaboration with composer Hans van Eck – made a new version of the work for eight speakers. The interview below took place immediately after this performance and was done by Robert van Altena (VPRO Eigentijds).

Toonzetters

From 2008 to 2012 the ten best compositions of the previous year were performed at the Dutch music festival Toonzetters. The works were selected by an international jury that chose the winner of the Buma Toonzetters Prize at the festival itself.

My five-part piano piece Kringen (Circles) – written for Ralph van Raat – was nominated for the Buma Toonzetters Prize of 2010. In honour of this occasion I had the following interview with Aad van Nieuwkerk (VPRO Eigentijds).
